As you embark on this important review, I urge you to approach your deliberations with utmost diligence, expertise, and collaborative spirit. Your work will not only influence national standards but also contribute to our global commitment to combat climate change."

Above were the submissions of the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi in his welcome speech during the Technical Committee meeting to review the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners in Nigeria. The review is significant as it forms a crucial component of the project, "Scaling Up Energy= Efficient and Climate-Friendly Cooling in Nigeria's Nationality Determined Contribution Revision."

Today's meeting is a further testament to the collaborative efforts between the Energy Commission of Energy (ECN), the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as well as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). As a follow up to the stakeholders' workshop held on 15th May, 2024, the review mechanism is necessary in order to solidify the Commission's commitment to energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

With the generous support from Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC), a not-for-profit organisation that has been working diligently on the MEPS project, the objective of enhancing energy efficiency and promoting climate-friendly cooling solutions that will ultimately contribute significantly to Nigeria's climate goals and sustainable energy access is achievable in records time.

The Commission equally appreciates the collaborative effort of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in driving the whole process. Its coordination of the entire review process is pivotal to the standardisation targeted towards the project. The technical expertise of the Nigeria National Committee of International Electrotechnical Commission (EC) that ensures that standards are robust, comprehensive, and align with international best practices cannot be overemphasized.

As a Commission, our leadership is poised to continue in its drive geared towards energy efficiency, energy development, and energy usability in all its ramifications for country, and for her citizenry.
